Background

I have been designing and building devices and objects for close to 30 years, first as a sculptor then as an industrial designer, inventor and engineer. I have broad knowledge of how things work, how they are made and what makes them useful, and how to manufacture them.

For all of my professional life I have been working in the interstices of art and science, merging soft skills with the rigor of engineering design. I studied engineering in college then pivoted to art school, studying sculpture and painting. After art school, I exhibited locally and operated my own metal shop and sculpture studio while managing the sculpture facility at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I honed my skills and craftsmanship in many areas as a young adult seeking the balance between creativity, capability and earning ability. I've worked as a welder, a cabinet maker, designed and built sets, props and special effects for TV, film and video production. I've fabricated custom jewelry, camera equipment, motorcycle parts and bicycles. I've designed furniture, eyeglasses, optical systems and complex industrial mechanisms. I learned the business of innovation, invention and intellectual property. Along the way, I've also learned how to define and run efficient development programs, leverage the skills of individual's talents to build effective teams, and over the years helped numerous entrepreneurs develop their ideas from conception to commercialization.
